Championship outfit Burnley have joined the race for Chesterfield star Tendayi Darikwa, HITC Sport understands.
The defender has been attracting interest from a number of Championship clubs this summer, including Preston North End, and the interest has increased after he handed in a transfer request at the Proact Stadium.
Preston boss Simon Grayson is said to be an admirer of Darikwa but now Burnley are hoping to pip their arch-rivals to the 23-year-old.
He caught the eye last season for the Spireites and was a consistent performer, leading him to win the club’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards, as the Derbyshire outfit made the League One play-offs just a year after winning the League Two title.
Darikwa, who plays at right-back but can also play on the wing as well as central midfield – he came through the youth ranks at Chesterfield and has gone on to make nearly 150 appearances, scoring 11 goals.
Sean Dyche’s Burnley are seemingly keen to rejuvenate their squad ahead of the 2015/16 Championship campaign, and have already made a number of key additions including Jelle Vossen and Chris Long.
Meanwhile, Preston will be eager to enhance their squad as much as possible to give them the best chance of maintaining their Sky Bet Championship status.
