Burnley look to have lost out on a transfer deal for United States of America international midfielder Konrad de la Fuente, who is closing in on a switch to Greek giants Olympiacos, per Turkish reporter Yagiz Sabuncuoglu.

It was first revealed by Italian journalist Matteo Moretto this week that the Clarets were one of a number of clubs eyeing up a move for the 21-year-old winger, who currently plays for Marseille in France.

Vincent Kompany was set to battle with Olympiacos and Besiktas - who the Lancashire outfit have done transfer business with this summer already due to Wout Weghorst's move to Türkiye - in his quest to add new wingers to his squad.

Greek reporter Giannis Chorianopoulos claimed on Tuesday that Burnley were in pole position to land the American.

There has now been a twist though with Olympiacos, who are owned by Nottingham Forest chief Evangelos Marinakis, reaching an agreement to take De la Fuente on loan for the 2022-23 season.

It appears that Burnley won't be short on wide players though going forward, with a move for Southampton forward Nathan Tella in the offing.

The Verdict

Considering Burnley seem to be closing in on Tella, then they probably won't lose too much sleep over losing out on De la Fuente.

Vincent Kompany seems to have many irons in the fire when it comes to adding to his attacking options, and the young USA international was just one of them.

Whilst De la Fuente has a great pedigree, having spent time at Barcelona, he may not have been suited to life in the Championship at the end of the day.

He does have a decent amount of experience from Ligue 1 last season, and he is definitely a very tricky and technical player, but Burnley won't be too sad on missing out on taking him for just one season.
