Burnley interested in Nottingham Forest transfer move

Premier League outfit Burnley remain interested in Nottingham Forest centre-back Joe Worrall as one of the players they ‘like’, as per the Daily Mail.

The 24-year-old has been in sensational fettle once again this term, forming a formidable partnership with Scotland international Scott McKenna and adapting well between a back three and flat back four.

However, his performances during the 2021/22 campaign have been no real surprise because of his form last season, helping his side to concede just 45 goals in 46 league games as the East Midlands side heavily relied on their defence to steer them away from any potential danger.

Quiz: Can you name which club Nottingham Forest signed these 20 strikers from?

Lewis Grabban

The centre-back missed the start of the season with a calf problem with his presence at the heart of defence being heavily missed, but he has re-established himself as a regular starter ever since then, making 21 league appearances during 2021/22.

However, there has been uncertainty regarding his future at the City Ground for some time with a whole host of top-flight teams, with Everton, West Ham and Newcastle United three of the more recent sides to reportedly throw their hat into the ring and the Clarets expressing an interest in the central defender in the summer.

They may face difficulty in luring him away from the Midlands though, with the Englishman putting pen to paper on a new contract in February 2020 to extend his time at the club until the summer of 2024.

And Forest were also in very good form in Steve Cooper despite recent losses, still looking like contenders to force their way into the top six before the end of the season.

The Verdict:

Taking into account the 24-year-old’s contract situation, Forest hold most of the power at the negotiating table and this can only help to maximise his price tag if they are lured to the negotiating table.

However, a move doesn’t seem likely at this stage with manager Cooper completely changing the Reds’ fortunes and they still have a real chance of getting into the play-offs now Djed Spence’s future seems to be sorted for the remainder of the season.

The possible retention of the Middlesbrough man would be a huge boost for the second-tier side but they can’t afford to throw that away now with the sale of the centre-back, unless they can recruit an adequate replacement.

Keeping that backline together could be crucial for their chances especially when their forwards aren’t firing, because there will probably be a small patch in the second half of the season when both new signing Keinan Davis and Lewis Grabban hit a frustrating run of form at the same time.

And with the potential of being promoted with his local side at the end of the campaign, Worrall will probably wait until the end of the campaign to re-assess his future unless a bid is accepted during this month.
