Burnley have not ruled out the prospect of retaining Maxwel Cornet this summer and are hopeful that Vincent Kompany’s project at Turf Moor will convince him to stay. 

Cornet arrived at Turf Moor 12 months ago from Lyon and went on to score nine goals in 26 Premier League appearances last season. Ultimately, though, the Ivorian’s form was not enough to keep Burnley in the division.

As per The Athletic, Burnley are expecting Cornet to leave this summer given his £17.5m release clause and interest from Chelsea.

Yet, that same report goes on to note that Burnley have not ruled out retaining Cornet.

The 25-year-old is back in training ahead of the EFL season starting at the end of July, with Cornet getting a first look at the new era under Kompany.

Kompany has brought the average age of the Burnley squad down drastically, adding three defenders all under the age of 22, alongside Samuel Basiten (25) and Scott Twine (22) further up the pitch.

Burnley begin their campaign away at last season’s beaten play-off finalists, Huddersfield Town, on Friday 29th July.

The Verdict

With Cornet available at such a cut-price, you’ve got to imagine that someone in the Premier League will take a punt on him. Chelsea might not end up being that club, but surely someone else will.

However, in the event of that not happening, Burnley can be confident of selling this new project to their star man.

Kompany’s work on the squad already looks impressive and there’s a youthful energy right through the core of the squad now. That’s going to be interesting to watch, particularly after how things eventually played out under Sean Dyche.

You’ve got to think that this new era suits Cornet far better than the old.
