Burnley's transfer activity under new boss Vincent Kompany has shown no signs of slowing down, and a fifth new Clarets player has been unveiled in the form of Samuel Bastien.

The DR Congo international has put pen-to-paper on a three-year contract with the Championship newcomers, having been touted to arrive at Turf Moor in a double deal with Standard Liege team-mate Jackson Muleka.

However, it is just central midfielder Bastien who has arrived for now to bolster the club's options in the engine room for the upcoming 2022-23 season.

Bastien is a Belgian-born midfielder and represented the nation at youth level, however he is a senior DR Congo player, receiving his first cap in 2021.

Having started his professional career at Anderlecht, the club that Kompany managed before making the move to Burnley, Bastien joined Italian side Chievo Verona, before returning to his home nation with Standard Liege in 2018.

The 25-year-old played 106 times in the top flight of Belgian football for Liege, scoring 11 goals, and has also featured in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League during his time at the club.

The Verdict

Burnley definitely needed to strengthen their engine room due to the long-term injury to Ashley Westwood and rumours surrounding Josh Brownhill's potential exit from Turf Moor.

Bastien offers the Clarets something different as a box-to-box outlet who is comfortable on the ball, and he could potentially partner Jack Cork in the middle if Brownhill does depart.

The DR Congo international was obviously expected to arrive with Jackson Muleka, but that hasn't happened, meaning that he is the first Belgian-based recruit under Kompany's management - and he may be the only one for now.

For the rumoured €800,000 fee though, Burnley could have snapped up somewhat of a bargain.
