Barclays Premier League outfits Burnley and Southampton are targeting a move for Huddersfield Town striker James Vaughan, according to Vital Football.

The 26-year-old has been injury plagued this season meaning he has started hardly any games for the Terriers this term.

However, Vaughan did score his first goal in more than a year in Huddersfield's 2-2 draw with Rotherham United on Boxing Day.

Vital Football claims that Burnley, Southampton and QPR are all monitoring the situation of the former Everton striker, and a deal could happen in January.

Huddersfield Town are eyeing a move for Dundee United striker Nadif Cifti, as reported on FLW, and the Turkish striker could potentially be a replacement for Vaughan who is attracting serious interest from top-flight clubs.

Chris Powell's side will be eager to add striking options as they’re currently heavily reliant on the goals of striker Nahki Wells, he has amassed ten goals so far this term and is aiding the Terriers in avoiding the relegation zone with the club currently five points clear of the dreaded drop zone.

The Huddersfield boss, however, hinted that Vaughan could be staying at the John Smith's Stadium, after saying that he believes Nahki Wells and Vaughan could strike up a partnership upfront.

Speaking to the Examiner, Powell said: "We will get there with them as a partnership,

“Obviously James has had his injury problems, and hopefully he is now over them.

“We have often used Nahki from the bench, and as I keep saying, it’s a 14-man game these days.

“Nahki needs to play with a partner rather than as a lone striker.

“But he and James are quite similar, so we need to work with them to develop that partnership.

“It’s something we will do, and we need to get to the stage where when they play as a pair, they actually play as a pair.”

It is highly unlikely Powell will want to let one his best players leave the club in the January transfer window, however if a sizeable bid is placed for the 26-year-old, a deal could be too hard to turn down.
