As quoted by Sheffield Wednesday's official Facebook page, Lee Bullen has discussed why the Owls could not manage to get a deal done for defender Michael Hector on Deadline Day.

The centre-half spent his time on loan at Wednesday last season and proved to be a real hit with many of his performances, particularly in the second half of the campaign, allowing the Owls to go on a good unbeaten run.

Naturally, then, they wanted him to be at the club from Chelsea for this season and into the future but they could not get a deal done, and Bullen has said it's because of the guidelines they were working between:

"I think Michael was always one that was on our radar. But I think it’s important that we work within guidelines. And unfortunately, it wasn’t one we were able to do.”

This obviously suggests that the sticking point was financial, with Chelsea clearly wanting a fee that Wednesday were not happy to pay.

The Verdict

It's a shame for the Owls and for Hector but it's done now.

Wednesday have got a good player in David Bates to arrive whilst Hector will have to sit around at Chelsea by the looks of things until he can try and move away in the January window.

What happens to him then, meanwhile, remains to be seen but for now Wednesday will be looking to build on their opening day win against Reading with the squad that they have.
