Brynjar Gunnarsson will be a household name for Reading, Nottingham Forest and Stoke City supporters, with the Icelandic international playing a crucial role for each side in his time in England.

The Icelander made 158 appearances in total for Stoke in his first spell in England, before earning a move to Watford in the Championship, where he went on to make 36 appearances for the Hornets.

But it was at Reading where Gunnarsson made himself a fans favourite, and was part of the Reading squad that won promotion to the Premier League in the 2005/2006 season.

Many Reading fans will remember Gunnarsson as the man who played a vital part in their win over Liverpool at Anfield in the FA Cup in 2010.

Gunnarsson made it look easy as he nutmegged Emiliano Insua, before putting in an inch-perfect cross for Shane Long to head home the winner in front of the Kop to spark jubilant scenes in the away end.

He went on to feature 47 times in total in the top-flight and played a crucial role in their impressive first season in the Premier League, where the Royals narrowly missed out on a spot in Europe.

Following their relegation back to the Championship after two seasons in the top-flight, Gunnarsson was one of the few players that weren't pinched by other clubs, and he was a regular in the Reading side before they won promotion back to the Premier League in the 2011/2012 season.

But having not made an appearance for the Royals again in the Premier League, he moved back to Iceland where he played for KR in what proved to be his final season as a player.

He went out in style as well, by helping KR to a league title, before retiring and becoming the assistant manager at Stjarnan.

But this spell with the Icelandic side was short-lived as Gunnarsson became manager of HK in Iceland and he certainly impressed in his first year with the club, as he guided them to promotion in a hugely successful year in his first year in management.
