Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce has set out his squad ambitions for his Hillsborough reign, saying he plans to trim the squad down significantly report the Sheffield Star

Wednesday currently boast a squad of 36 players but the former Aston Villa boss wants one no bigger than 24 players and will look to implement that over the summer.

"A squad of 23 to 24 is enough these days and then that, of course, opens up the door for the young ones to train with the first-team," Bruce said.

"We will eventually head towards that size and that is what I have always tried to do but it is a while off yet.

"At the moment, the players are all training hard and working as best as they can."

A host of first-team squad members are set to be out of contract at the end of the season including George Boyd, Keiran Lee, Gary Hooper and Kieren Westwood.

Wednesday picked up a much-needed win last weekend away to Ipswich Town in Bruce's first match in charge and he will be looking to continue that form.

This weekend sees them welcome Reading to Hillsborough as they look to push further away from the foot of the table and maybe piece together a play-off push.

The verdict

This is a nice idea but it is easier said than done.

I am sure that Luhukay would have liked a smaller squad as well but given the ludicrous injury problems faced often had no choice but to bring in more bodies.

Bruce will need to get to the bottom of the injury problems first and foremost.
