Steve Bruce has provided an injury update to Aston Villa’s official Twitter feed, confirming that Jonathan Kodjia could return to first-team action this coming weekend, after the striker missed last night’s victory over Preston North End through injury.

Kodjia, 28, missed the opening two months of the season through injury, and suffered a setback on Sunday afternoon, picking up another knock on his ankle in the Second City derby with Birmingham City, which ruled him out of last night’s trip to Deepdale.

However, Bruce is set to welcome the Ivorian back into the fold this weekend, with the Villa boss confirming that the striker could return against Sheffield Wednesday at Villa Park.

Villa will be looking to strengthen their grip on a place in the top-six this weekend against Wednesday, having moved back up into fifth last night thanks to a 2-0 victory over Preston. Goals from James Chester and Robert Snodgrass in the first-half secured all three points for Bruce’s side.

Whilst Bruce confirmed that he could welcome Kodjia back into first-team contention on Saturday, there are doubts over Josh Onomah, who picked up a groin injury in last night’s victory. The on-loan Tottenham man will be assessed ahead of the clash with Sheffield Wednesday.

The Verdict

This is yet more pleasing news for Aston Villa and the club’s supporters, with Kodjia’s return likely to improve the mood around Villa Park even further.

Bruce will not feel any pressure in rushing Kodjia back to first-team action, particularly after how well Keinan Davis once again deputised at Deepdale last night.

Last season, Kodjia’s availability would have seen him walk into the first-team, but now, the likelihood is he will be eased back into action, which highlights the position Villa find themselves in.
