Steve Bruce has confirmed some major Aston Villa team news ahead of this weekend’s clash with Wigan Athletic, that Mile Jedinak will start in defence, reports the club’s official website.

Jedinak, who usually plays in central midfield, will step back into Villa’s defence, after impressing in last weekend’s victory over Sheffield Wednesday, where he deputised for the injured Nathan Baker at centre-back.

Bruce’s decision is likely to see him leave out natural defenders Tommy Elphick and Micah Richards, who have both been used sparingly across the season.

Speaking about his decision, Bruce told the media: “Mile Jedinak will play centre-back tomorrow. He was excellent there against Sheffield Wednesday.”

The Australian international has impressed at Villa Park since his arrival from Crystal Palace last summer, and has been particularly influential in Villa’s upturn in form, which has seen them win four from their last five fixtures.

Bruce’s side will be hopeful of recording another victory tomorrow when they travel to the DW stadium to face Wigan, who are looking increasingly like suffering relegation to League One.
