Bristol Rovers today completed their third and fourth signings of the summer, bringing in Alex Rodman and Theo Widdrington in, the club announced on their official website

Winger Rodman arrives as a free agent after rejecting a new deal at Shrewsbury Town last season and was an integral member to the Shrews' play-off charge.

Gas manager Darrell Clarke is happy to have that extra experience on board for the coming season.

"We are delighted to secure the services of Alex,” Clarke told the club's official website.

“He’s a player that adds a lot of experience and has the ability to cut inside from wide areas.

“Alex adds to the competition that we have in wide areas, with Sam Matthews, Bernard Mensah and Kyle Bennett all options in that part of the pitch.”

Rodman scored five goals and assisted seven more on Shrewsbury's way to play-off final heartbreak.

Clarke is also chuffed to have gained the services of Widdrington, saying: "Theo is an exciting prospect that was released by Portsmouth as they don’t have an under-23 setup."

“Our Development Squad was created to give players a chance to forge their way into the first-team and Theo will get a chance to impress here.”

The verdict

Rodman, in particular, is a very strong signing.

At 31-years-old he is not likely to be a long-term player for the Gas, but if he can carry on his form for one more season Bristol Rovers could be right up there.

It's harder to tell with Widdrington, but central midfield was an area that Clarke was lacking players so they are at least looking in the right areas.
