Bristol Rovers have ruled out a move for Wales international Joe Ledley in the January transfer window as clubs look to get their business done early.

BristolLive is reporting that the 32-year-old isn't a current option for Pirates manager Ben Garner, despite the former Premier League international wanting a move closer to home.

Ledley wouldn't suit the type of style that Rovers are looking for, with Garner wanting a quick, energetic, possession-based style of play as he starts to shape his squad having been appointed last month.

The 32-year-old is known to be a defensive-minded midfielder and not being the quickest or most mobile option in the centre of the park, Rovers are likely to stick with their current defensive midfield trio of captain Ollie Clarke, Ed Upson and Abu Ogogo.

Garner has already made one midfield addition to his squad in the first week of the transfer window being open, bringing in Reading midfielder Josh Barrett on an undisclosed fee with a two-and-a-half year contract.

Having been with Charlton Athletic on a month-long contract and making just one appearance before being released, Ledley has already revealed that he is open to a move back to South Wales with Newport County.

The Verdict

Ledley would bring experience and bite to the Rovers midfield however he is not an option that Garner necessarily needs if he wants to build a squad that would play his style of football.

While Ledley may be a good player and be a good option to have, Rovers are right to be content with the options they currently have to protect their defence.
