After half of the season had passed us by, things were looking very bleak for Bristol Rovers.

They seemed to be involved in a relegation battle with little means of escape. Tom Nichols wasn’t scoring and their summer signing Stefan Payne was misfiring too.

Darrell Clarke paid for the slump with his job and when Graham Coughlan came in, he had a huge job on his hands. He had to find a striker capable of putting the ball away, as well as keeping the rest of the side solid and focused.

He turned to Jonson Clarke-Harris, the former Rotherham man who signed for Coventry City in the summer. He had fallen down the pecking order at the Ricoh and the Gas pulled off something of a coup by bringing him into the fold.

He’s been nothing short of sensational for Coughlan, scoring the goals that have alleviated the stress of relegation somewhat. They’re not out of the woods, five points separate them and the side in 21st, but 14ht is a lofty position given their earlier struggles.

Clarke-Harris has been attracting attention since his move and now the Gas have a fight on their hands. If a big bid is tabled in the summer, do they fight to hold on to their star striker or cash in and rebuild?

He’s bagged 16 league goals in total, leaving him as the sixth highest scorer in League Pone despite the winter move. At just 24-years-old he’s clearly got a big future ahead of him and has thrived being played down the centre for Coughlan’s side.

When deployed in the right area and allowed to express his skills, he’s a real handful for defenders. He’s quick, able to sniff out space and can finish too. His size and speed had some managers thinking they’d make a winger out of him. Now Bristol Rovers might make a profit out of him.

They’ve got a big call in the summer. Hang on to him and keep playing to his strengths and they could launch an audacious attempt for a top six finish. Cash in, and they could be costing themselves a lot more in the long run.
