Bristol City are not looking to re-sign Fenerbahce defender Steven Caulker despite reports suggesting the contrary, according to Bristol Post

Caulker joined the Robins on a season-long loan from Tottenham early on in his career and impressed at Ashton Gate.

Reports in Turkey have claimed that the 30-year-old was set to return to the Championship club after falling out of favour at Fenerbahce and spending last season on loan at Super Lig side Gaziantep FK but it appears those are wide of the mark.

The Bristol Post has reported that Nigel Pearson is keen to recruit a new central defender but that Caulker is not on his radar and there is no truth to the rumours that suggest otherwise.

City have already signed Kal Naismith this summer but with Robbie Cundy leaving to join Barnsley, Taylor Moore sent out on loan to Shrewsbury Town, and Zak Vyner believed to be up for sale, it appears they feel more depth is needed at centre-back.

The Verdict

Plenty of Robins fans will remember Caulker's loan spell at the club fondly but bringing him back to the club always looked like a heart-over-head sort of move.

They are in the market for another centre-back but the reported interest appeared to be based on a strong spell the defender had at Ashton Gate as a teenager more than a decade ago and it's hard to argue that is a wise way to recruit.

He looks out of favour in Turkey and may well be keen to return to England this summer but he'll likely have to take a wage cut for any Championship teams to be interested.

According to Capology, Caulker is currently on €33,269 (£28,224) a week.
