Bristol City captain Josh Brownhill has admitted that Tuesday night's 2-1 defeat to Millwall at Ashton Gate was 'frustrating'.

Millwall took the lead in the 11th minute through Jed Wallace, as the winger slotted the ball coolly past Daniel Bentley's near post, after making a overlapping run on the right-hand side.

Bristol City conceded again halfway through the second half courtesy of a set-piece, as Millwall defender Jake Cooper headed in Wallace's free-kick.

Although Callum O'Dowda found the net in the 84th minute with a shot that cannoned off the far post into the goal, it proved to be nothing more than a consolation, as Bristol City suffered their first home defeat since the opening day of the season.

The Robins failed to make it three wins in succession, but remain in 4th place in the league table with 35 points from 21 games.

Speaking to the club website, club captain Josh Brownhill gave his assessment of the performance, stating that his side did not make the best of starts.

“It’s frustrating,” Brownhill said on the result.

“We didn’t start the best at all. We wasted the first 45 minutes, went a goal down as well. Then we were 2-0 down and we gave ourselves too much to do."

When asked about how the opposition played and what made the game tough, the 23-year-old midfielder said that Millwall were well organised.

“They [Millwall] are hard to break down, that’s the way they are. They have some big boys, they defended well but we gave ourselves too much to do."

Tuesday's defeat to Millwall was Bristol City's first loss to the South London side since April 2018.

The Verdict

It will be a difficult result to take for Bristol City, bearing in mind that 3rd placed Fulham also lost on Tuesday to Preston - making it a failed opportunity to go three points clear of the London side in the table.

Millwall have been excellent away from home in the last few weeks, but Bristol City will regardless be disappointed at the manner of the defeat - their first at Ashton Gate in eight matches.
