Bristol City will not be signing Nathan Thompson after the defender completed a trial with the Championship side.

The 28-year-old is a free agent after deciding to leave Portsmouth at the end of last season despite two relatively successful years on the south coast.

Thompson established himself as an important part of Kenny Jackett's side and featured regularly as they reached the play-offs in the previous campaign.

However, he wanted to explore his opportunities and it appeared a move to the Robins could be on the cards after it was revealed he was having a trial with Lee Johnson's side, which included him featuring against Yeovil for the U23s over the weekend.

But, no deal is going to be on the table now, with Bristol Live reporter Gregor MacGregor confirming on Twitter that the promotion hopefuls will be looking elsewhere.

"Nathan Thompson has been released after his trial. Not staying at Bristol City this summer."

Defensive reinforcements will be needed at Ashton Gate it seems, with Brighton making a big-money move for Adam Webster.

The Verdict

You have to trust Johnson's judgement on this as he and the coaching team will have been watching Thompson over recent weeks and they clearly don't think he is worth signing.

That does seem a bit strange as the former Pompey man would give them experienced cover in a few positions and is available on a free.

Having said that, the player may want guaranteed minutes, so there are various aspects to this that we don't know.

Ultimately though, new additions are needed at the back and time is starting to run out for the Robins who could have a busy end to the window.
