Bristol City continue to hunt for an out-and-out striker who could solve their striker problems, and have Peterborough United's goalscoring sensation Ivan Toney is in their sights.

The Robins have been searching for a new striker since the summer, and having failed to land Eddie Nketiah who opted for a loan switch to Leeds, Lee Johnson brought in Benik Afobe on a season-long loan.

However, just five games into his City career, the striker on loan from Stoke City ruptured his Anterior Cruciate Ligament and has been out of action since the middle of September.

Their latest setback prompted the Robins gaffer to recruit Spaniard Rodri on a short-term deal, however, they still crave a striker that can come in for the long-term.

Toney is thought to be the focus of their attention, however, Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has named his price for the in-form forward.

The Posh chairman said: "Toney will break the transfer record for a League One player when he goes,” MacAnthony said. “If he goes that is. He’ll certainly smash the Posh record.

"We don’t want to lose anyone in January, but you can’t guarantee anything in football. If we do lose anyone they will be replaced."

Peterborough United's record transfer sale was Britt Assombalonga to Nottingham Forest for £5.5 million in August 20114, while Bristol City's record transfer signing was £8 million for Tomas Kalas in the summer just gone.

The record transfer sale by a League One club came in 2017 when Everton bought Ademola Lookman from Charlton for £11 million, and the Posh are looking at selling Toney for £13 million or more.

Toney has currently scored 12 in 20 games for the Posh this season down in League One.

The Verdict

Bristol City will more than likely need to break their own transfer record if they were to land Toney, and while they are desperate for a striker, they could always pay over the odds for a new forward.

While Toney is talented, he should only be bought for the right yet fair price, and the in-form forward's future currently lies in Peterborough's hands.
