Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has revealed that Bristol City are interested in signing defender Anfernee Dijksteel, via reports from the Bristol Post's Gregor MacGregor.

The 22-year-old was a hugely important player for Bowyer's side last season, making 39 appearances as the Addicks won promotion to the second tier via the Sky Bet League One play-offs.

The versatile Dutchman operated mostly as a right-back for the Addicks, but also pushed further forward to play on a right-hand side of a five-man midfield when they looked to change their system.

Middlesbrough have been strongly linked with the signing of the powerhouse, but Football Insider claimed that Jonathan Woodgate's side had a bid rejected for the player not so long ago.

Now, via MacGregor, Bowyer has revealed that Dijksteel is wanted by Bristol City, with the 22-year-old entering the final year of his contract at The Valley.

The Robins had Jack Hunt at right-back for most of last season, so Lee Johnson's side will be looking to add competition to that add area of the pitch as they prepare to take on Leeds United this Sunday.

The Verdict

I think Bristol City definitely need to add a new right-back to their squad, and bringing in a versatile player like Dijksteel would fill more than one position for sure.

He displays so much athleticism and power down the flanks, but in defence he rarely puts a foot wrong, and he would be an excellent signing for the Robins.

With only one year left on his current deal at the Valley, a deal could be very possible indeed.
