Bristol City have turned their attentions to Luton Town midfielder Pelly Ruddock-Mpanzu in a transfer deadline day twist.

BBC's Alistair Durden first reported the news on Twitter, stating that the Robins have shown an interest in the 26-year-old, but that the 19-year-old Ampadu still remains their first choice to fill the defensive midfield role.

Mpanzu first joined the Hatters on loan from West Ham United in the 2013-2014 season before appearing for them permanently from 2014 onwards.

The London-born midfielder has become a regular at Kenilworth Road, as he has maintained a slot in the Luton first-team for half a decade, going on to make 235 appearances and score 17 goals for the club.

The midfielder also netted his first goal of the season and his first goal at Championship level back in October against Bristol City, curling into the top corner from the edge of the area before wheeling away in celebration.

The latest transfer rumours come after Johnson has suffered a setback in the chase of Ampadu, as RB Leipzig are keen to hold onto the youngster instead of letting him return to parent club Chelsea.

The Verdict

Mpanzu would add physicality and technical ability to the midfield at Ashton Gate if Bristol City were to make a late swoop for him.

The midfielder has shown over the past few months that he is capable of performing at Championship level, and he would be a good backup plan for the club if they are unable to land Ampadu by the transfer deadline.
