Championship mid-table occupiers Bristol City are hoping to secure a deal for Preston North End goalkeeper Chris Maxwell.

The Robins are interested in adding the stopper to their ranks, and according to Alan Nixon, could be in a fight with League One outfit Charlton Athletic to land the 28-year-old.

Maxwell has made only a handful of appearances for North End this term and is not considered the number one goalkeeper at the club by manager Alex Neil.

However, he has seemingly caught the eye of some onlooking managers, with Lee Johnson keen to add more depth to his goalkeeping ranks, and Charlton looking to add quality from the league above as they seek a return to Championship football.

Bristol have struggled to make any sort of run at the top six this season and sit in mid-table at the moment. Lee Johnson will be keen to add some new players to his squad during January though in the hope of putting together a run in the second half of the season, and Maxwell might well fit in nicely with his plans for a deeper squad.

The Verdict

Maxwell isn't going to be a game changing signing for City, so it's a bit of a strange one in all honesty if they do pursue it.

He might be more suited at Charlton, where the chance of regular football might well be more appealing than a move to the bench at Ashton Gate.

There surely won't be a big fee involved either, so I can't say it's one of the more interesting transfer stories of 2019!
