Bristol City have submitted a $4m (£3.4m) bid for Columbus Crew goalkeeper Zack Steffen, according to MLSSoccer.com.

The 23-year old has been capped by his country three times and has enjoyed a standout season with the Black and Gold.

He joined them in July 2016 after two years with German club SC Freiburg, and has since made 50 appearances, keeping 16 clean sheets in that period. He was named MLS Player of the Month for a his performances in May, keeping five clean sheets.

Columbus Crew Sporting Director Gregg Berhalter wouldn't confirm the bid, telling the website: "Every transfer window we've had we’ve been getting calls about some of our players, so this is pretty much normal. What I’d say is that, like always, we want to be a place where we get players and we develop them and we help them advance in their careers, wherever that may be."

Having sold Bobby Reid and Aden Flint, Bristol City have generated around £15m to strengthen over the summer period.

A swoop for a keeper would increase the pressure on Frank Fielding, the current number one. He was between the sticks for the terrible run of form at the end of the season, in which the Robins won four matches in eighteen, including conceding five at home in an astounding 5-5 draw with Hull City.

The Verdict

It's not a surprise to see Lee Johnson hunting a keeper, especially not with the tendency they had to concede goals towards the end of the season.

Steffen looks like a great target, he's 6ft 3in and at just 23 has lots of time to develop and learn.
