Bristol City, Sheffield Wednesday appear to be falling behind in race for target

A selection of Championship clubs are reportedly getting pipped to the signing of a young Motherwell midfielder.

According to the BBC, David Turnbull is most likely to be joining Norwich and are ‘close to winning the race for the signature’.

The 19-year-old has had a long list of Championship admirers, with Bristol Live suggesting that Barnsley, Bristol City and Sheffield Wednesday are all interested in the midfielder.

Scottish champions Celtic were also keen and looked to be the frontrunners when a bid of £3million was allegedly accepted. However, it is reported that Daniel Farke’s side have raided the deal and now have £3.25million bid accepted.

The story says that Celtic released a statement on Friday to say that their offer to club had been rejected.

Turnbull had a magnificent season last year, chipping in with 16 goals in 34 games in all competitions, all from the centre of midfield.

Bristol Live sources say that despite their interest in their player, they have never fancied themselves to actually pull off the signing.

The Verdict

Championship clubs will be frustrated that they are not able to sign Turnbull, but with Celtic and Norwich interested, they can’t be surprised.

If Turnbull does join Norwich – and it looks like he will – then it might not be the best career move for him. Despite his emphatic campaign last year, where he was the club’s young player of the season, the step up to the Premier League might prove too much for him and he may struggle for game time.

Whereas in the Championship he would be given games, especially if he joined any of the three teams reported to be interested in him.

Bristol City would have been a good fit for the player as he would’ve joined a coach in Lee Johnson with a good record for playing young players. If Turnbull finds himself at the end of the season with seven Premier League games under his belt, then he could end up regretting not getting 35+ Championship games instead.
