Bristol City are set to sign Marley Watkins from Norwich City, according to the print edition of the Daily Mirror (April 20th, page 57).

Watkins only joined Norwich last summer from Barnsley but he is already set to move again to reunite with Lee Johnson at Bristol City.

Johnson worked with Watkins at Barnsley and the pair are set to meet again at Ashton Gate as Bristol City move early in the transfer market.

The 27-year-old has had a below-par campaign at Carrow Road after arriving with plenty of hype.

He has found the net just once, in the League Cup win over Charlton Athletic, and added one further assist in 28 outings in all competitions for the Canaries this season.

Watkins has mainly been used as a substitute, too, with just twelve league starts to his name.

But the twice-capped Wales international scored ten goals in 45 games for Barnsley last season and attracted attention from a number of clubs.

Watkins plays predominantly as a winger but he can play as a central attacking midfielder or as a striker too, adding versatility to Johnson's options.

Bristol City are preparing for next season as their chances of reaching the play-offs this year have been dented by a recent loss of form.

The Verdict

Watkins has not enjoyed a successful year at Norwich but he still has plenty to offer at this level. Perhaps working with Johnson again might get the 27-year-old back to his best. His experience at Championship level and his versatility would add plenty to Bristol City's squad.
