Bristol City look set to beat Reading to the signing of Colchester United attacker Sammie Szmodics.

The 23-year-old has been in superb form for the U's this term, notching 15 goals and impressing over the course of the campaign with a number of fine performances.

And according to the Daily Mirror, Szmodics looks like he is going to get his Championship move and sign for Lee Johnson's men, who are nearing a deal to land the attacker on a free transfer.

The loss of Szmodics will be a bitter blow to Colchester, especially with him due to leave for nothing, but for Bristol City it could well prove a massive coup as they sign one of the most sought after young talents outside of the top two divisions in English football.

Szmodics has made just shy of 150 appearances for Colchester since making his breakthrough into the first team, and his progression to a higher level has been coming for a while following some consistent displays over the last few seasons.

The 23-year-old has hit double figures in both the last two seasons and Robins manager Lee Johnson will be hoping he can carry his goalscoring exploits into the second tier as City look to once again mount a challenge for the top six next year.

The Verdict

This is a fine signing this one, especially on a free transfer.

Szmodics has more than proved himself over the last few seasons and there is little doubt he has the ability to make the step up a few levels.

If he can continue his momentum and get some regular first-team football at Ashton Gate, he could well prove a fine piece of business for the Robins.
