Bristol City midfielder James Morton has joined Forest Green Rovers on a season-long loan, after signing a new two-year contract at Ashton Gate, as confirmed on the club's website.

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at National League South outfit Bath City, where he scored one goal and provided twelve assists for his teammates in 50 appearances, helping the Romans reach the play-off semi-finals.

The academy prospect has signed a new two-year deal at Ashton Gate, with the option of a further year, but has been sent out on loan to gain more experience.

Forest Green finished fifth in League Two last season, losing in the play-off semi-final to Tranmere Rovers, the team that would eventually go on to win promotion.

Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson will be hoping to challenge for promotion next season, after signing a new four-year contract at Ashton Gate this summer.

The Robins finished eighth in the Championship last season, one point outside the play-offs and missed out on a place in the top six on the final day of the campaign.

The Verdict

Morton is a talented young player and could have a big future at Bristol City.

However, the Robins will be hoping to challenge for promotion next season, so it's highly unlikely that he will get a chance in the first-team, given his lack of experience at that level.

It's a sensible decision for Bristol City to loan him out and it's probably the best option for his development.

He could be able to make an impact for Forest Green in League Two, a team which will be hoping to challenge at the top end of the table.

It will be a chance for the midfielder to gain some vital experience in the EFL and he could be a player to watch out for in the future.
