Bristol City midfielder Kasey Palmer has spoken honestly about his new role in the side after his permanent transfer from Chelsea in the summer.

Palmer has been a mainstay within the Robins XI and has performed brilliantly so far this season. The Robins have won three out of their first five games, and will be looking to continue their good run when they take on Middlesbrough this weekend.

Palmer never represented Chelsea in the Premier League and went on loan to four Championship clubs during his time with the Blues. One of those clubs was in fact Bristol City, last season and he now finds himself back working with Lee Johnson.

Talking to the Bristol Post about his new role in the side, he said: "It’s similar in a way, but defensively I’m capable of doing more. So it might seem like I’m in more deeper positions a lot more than last season. Maybe because I’m fitter.

"Often last season it was more focused on the attacking side of what I can do, while this year is more about the all-round game. And the manager’s been crucial in that."

The Verdict

Getting Palmer in on a permanent was a wonderful piece of business from Bristol City and Lee Johnson. The midfielder has previous Championship experience and has performed excellently for the club so far this season.

It's easy to forget that he's just 22 years of age, and that bodes well for the future. He will be a mainstay for a number of years, and judging by what he has said, Johnson has helped him better his defensive play.

Sitting in fourth, it has been a brilliant start to the season for Bristol City, they have picked up three wins out of five and currently remain unbeaten away from home.
