The hotly-anticipated promotion clash between Derby County and Bristol City on Friday night at the IPro Stadium saw defences come out on top, with the sides sharing the spoils in a 0-0 draw.

Derby maybe had the better chances to win but the game's big talking point came late on when Rams debutant Cameron Jerome was booked for diving by referee Darren England.

It looked like Robins defender Aden Flint made contact with the former Norwich man, who exaggerated his fall and that might be why the man in the middle did not point to the spot.

One man who had as good a view of the incident as anyone was Bristol City keeper Luke Steele, who replaced Frank Fielding at half-time and he was surprisingly candid in his assessment of the incident.

He told the club's website: "It looks like Aden made contact but I think Cameron let himself down in the theatrics after.

"I think the referee might have awarded a penalty if he hadn’t gone down like he did. I think he could have gone down a bit more graciously. That’s a tough call for the referee and its an important one."

The Verdict

Everyone watching could tell it was a penalty. It was a massive decision, one that could have a real impact on the promotion race and you cant tell the ref got it wrong from even Steele being so honest as to say that it looked a penalty.

Aden Flint's face when he looked up after the challenge was the look of a man who knew he had given away a penalty and he won't know how he's got away with that.
