Bristol City have made a bid to sign Wigan Athletic defender Tom Pearce, a report from a print edition of The Sun (24/01, p59) has claimed.

Pearce joined Wigan from Leeds United back in the 2019 January transfer window, and has since gone onto make 33 appearances in all competitions for the Latics.

Now it seems as though the 22-year-old is starting to attract attention from the Championship, following his impressive performances in difficult circumstances for Wigan in League One this season.

According to this latest report, Bristol City have made an offer to take Pearce on loan to Ashton Gate for the remainder of the season.

It is thought that the Robins believe Pearce is a player who can help add strength in depth and provide cover for the club in the full-back positions.

Dean Holden's side have yet to complete a signing in the January transfer window, and they may need to add some numbers to their squad, given they are still competing on two fronts, after beating Millwall 3-0 on Saturday to earn themselves a clash with Sheffield United in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

As things stand, Bristol City are currently ninth in the Championship table, six points adrift of the play-off places.

The Verdict

This could be a decent signing for Bristol City to make.

Pearce is a decent player who has showed plenty of promise, and you do feel as though he could do a decent job in the Championship, meaning he could be a good signing.

With Jay DaSilva currently out through injury, the Robins are also short of cover on the left-hand side of their defence at the minute.

As a result, you do feel as though it could make sense for the club to bring in a left-back such as Pearce, who can offer them that cover on loan until DaSilva is able to make a full comeback following his return to fitness.
