Bristol City central midfielder Josh Brownhill has departed Ashton Gate and signed for Premier League side Burnley, for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old has been a part of the Robins since 2016 when he signed on a free transfer following his release from Preston North End, and he developed his skills under Lee Johnson to become one of the best all-round midfielders in the Championship.

He made 160 appearances and scored a total of 17 goals across all competitions for the Robins, becoming a role model for all young fans and his attitude towards the club was second-to-none, before signing a contract with the Clarets until the summer of 2023.

On the departure of Brownhill, Johnson said: "Josh has been one of my favourite signings throughout my time in football and I am delighted with the progress he has made.

"He is a fantastic student who fully deserves his shot in the Premier League and we wish him all the best."

The midfielder had many memorable moments in a Robins shirt, scoring winners against Cardiff City and Charlton Athletic this season as he became renowned for his goalscoring ability from long range.

The 24-year-old has also matured away from the pitch this season, as he has become a leader inside the dressing room and had the opportunity to lead the Robins out as captain from the start of the season up until his departure.

The Verdict

Brownhill has shown that he has the ability to step up and become an important figure with the Bristol City side as a leader, and he deserves the opportunity to make a name for himself in the Premier League.

The central midfielder will be a big loss for the Robins in their midfield department, however they have the players that are able to step up and replace him over the next few months.
