Bristol City loanee James Tavernier has been more use to watching his current Bristol City side from the bench, but the man on loan from Wigan is now set to feature in the final five games that remain in the Robins' Sky Bet League One season.

Tavernier, 23, has been second-choice to right wing-back Mark Little since joining Bristol City on loan from Wigan back in the January transfer window.

But, Little suffered a dislocated shoulder in their 1-1 draw away to Oldham last weekend ruling the 26-year-old out for the remainder of the season.

Tavernier will now have his sights set in a Bristol City jersey for the remainder of the season up until his loan expires with club.

The Bradford born defender has already earned honours at Rotherham United where he helped the club win promotion via the pay-offs last season and more recently winning the Johnstone's Paint Trophy with his current Bristol City side.

The former Newcastle United defender will now look to complete his treble with the Robins by winning promotion and from there, the league title before returning to Wigan Athletic.

It would come of no surprise if Tavenier has any intentions on staying with Bristol City on a permanent basis after Wigan's poor Sky Bet Championship campaign this season.

"What has happened at Wigan has been unfortunate, but that is what can happen in football," reflected Tavernier to Bristol Post.

"It was only last season that they were fighting for promotion in the play-offs and it shows how quickly things can change."

"To come down here and join a team that has been doing really well has been great for me personally.

"I have an opportunity to win three medals inside 12 months and, if I can do that, it will have been a good year."

Bristol City can move a step ever closer to promotion on Saturday as they travel to Deepdale as they lead 3rd-placed MK Dons by 13 points with just five games to go.
