Bristol City have targeted Southampton defender Sam McQueen as a replacement for Burnley-bound Joe Bryan.

The Robins full-back is poised to join the Clarets for around £6m according to the Mirror and the same report has revealed that Lee Johnson sees McQueen as the ideal replacement.

They add that the 23-year old has been told he can leave the Premier League side this summer even though he has featured in seven league games this season.

With Ryan Bertrand ahead of him in the pecking order, McQueen's opportunities have been limited, whilst left-back Matt Targett is set to return from a loan spell with Fulham this summer.

Therefore, Bristol City should be able to agree a deal with the Saints for McQueen and will surely hope to conclude it as soon as possible once Bryan has moved on.

He could be one of many new faces at Ashton Gate this summer as Johnson looks to create a bigger squad that can push for promotion after his side struggled towards the end of the season which saw them miss out on a top six place.

The Verdict

This would be a very good signing for Bristol City. Losing Bryan is a blow as he has been outstanding but McQueen would excel in the Championship.

He is an attack-minded full-back and would easily fit into the Robins style of play, whilst at 23 he still has a lot of time to improve.

Chances for McQueen at Southampton are hard to come by given Bertrand's quality so a move would benefit his career too.
