Ahead of Bristol City's clash with Millwall tomorrow, centre-back Ashley Williams was quizzed on the defensive performance against play-off chasers Fulham by BristolLive.

The Robins went 1-0 up inside the first half at Craven Cottage, before they had to dig deep against Scott Parker's men as the hosts laid siege to the Bristol City goal in the second half, having 21 shots across the afternoon as well as 68% possession.

Williams and co. were forced to sit back and soak up the pressure, before they hit the Cottagers on the counter to score a second and Neeskens Kebano finally found a way through for Fulham in the 86th minute, but it was to be nothing short of a consolation.

Williams said: "I know it’s a bit cliche but everyone put a real shift in.

"We would have liked the clean sheet but to play against a team of good quality, against a good striker, to defend like we did especially towards the end is something we can be pleased with."

Since arriving at Ashton Gate in the summer, Williams has brought a different dimension to the Robins' defence, as his experience, leadership and control of the back four has prevented the opposition from breaking through many times.

The Welsh international's good form during the first few months of the season earned him a contract extension till the end of the campaign as the Robins currently lie fourth in the table.

The Verdict

Williams and the rest of the defence was a rock for the Robins when they visited Craven Cottage, and Williams is right to praise his team-mates for the part they played in the defensive display.

Fulham have proven that they are one of the better teams in the Championship this season, and Bristol City held their own defensively against a strong attacking outfit.
