Bristol City have confirmed that the first-team players at Ashton Gate have agreed to defer some of their wages as the EFL’s postponement continues.  

Global events have seen public safety become a priority over the last six weeks, with the Championship’s last fixtures coming way back on the first weekend in March.

Since then a number of clubs in a variety of divisions have seen players defer wages, with the Robins the latest to confirm such measures.

A statement on the club website confirmed that the first-team players have agreed to defer a percentage of their wage for three months, other staff members have agreed salary reductions, whilst the club has also leaned on the government job retention scheme for some non-playing staff.

Leeds United were amongst the first clubs to confirm that players would be deferring wages during this postponement, with the Robins – and many others – since following suit.

In terms of on-field matters, when the season cane resume, Bristol City are looking to break back into the play-off picture, with Lee Johnson’s side just a point behind Preston North End, who occupy the final play-off spot at this moment in time.

The Verdict

This is a good move from Bristol City, who have made the decision that many football clubs are finding the logical one.

These are testing times and football clubs’ decisions are going under the spotlight, with some top-flight clubs getting ripped to pieces.

For the Robins, they will feel this decision puts them in a better light.
