Bristol City are edging closer towards the signing of Southampton defender Sam McQueen, according to the print edition of The Mirror via The Bristol Post.

With Joe Bryan set to leave Bristol City and join Burnley in a £6m deal, Southampton's McQueen has been lined up as his replacement and the Robins are ready to press ahead with this deal once Bryan goes.

Bryan has been an integral part of Bristol City's side in the past few years since graduating through the academy at Ashton Gate.

The 24-year-old played 48 times for Bristol City last season and has well over 200 appearances to his name at the club.

Predominantly a left-back, Bryan can also operate as a defensive midfielder, central midfielder or as a left-winger, making him a useful versatile option for Burnley.

He is now set to get his chance in the Premier League with the Clarets closing in on his £6m signature.

Bristol City have moved quickly to find Bryan's successor with McQueen ready to come in.

The 23-year-old is finding game time hard to come by at Southampton, having only played seven Premier League matches this season.

The former England under-21 international, who has also played at Southend United on loan before, can play as a left-back or on the wing too.

The Verdict

This move seems to suit all parties; Southampton do not want him with Ryan Bertrand nailing down the starting spot at left-back, the player needs to move for the sake of his career and Bristol City need a Bryan replacement.

McQueen is still young but with six goals in eight games for the under-23 side this season, it is clear that he is too good to be playing youth football now.

The Championship is the perfect environment for him to be tested in and Bristol City could benefit from having the attack-minded full-back as their replacement for Bryan.

Bryan definitely deserves a shot in the Premier League and no one will begrudge him his move or question his loyalty.
