Bristol City midfielder Korey Smith has taken to Instagram after making his long-awaited return from injury during an Under-23s match on Monday afternoon.
Smith has not featured for the Robins’ first team since suffering an injury during their clash with Reading back in April, but he was named in the starting line-up for the Under 23s’ clash with Cardiff on Monday.
The 28-year-old lasted 71 minutes before he was substituted during the clash which ended 2-2, as Smith stepped up his injury recovery after featuring for just 146 minutes since first suffering ligament damage back in August 2018.
The former Oldham man’s injury woes have meant he has been forced to watch from the stands during the Robins’ solid start to the Championship season, but it appears he could now be in contention ahead of City’s clash with Nottingham Forest after the international break.
Smith took to Instagram to reveal his joy at making his comeback, while he described the match as “a big milestone” in his long road to recovery.
Smith has made a total of 174 appearances since first joining the Ashton Gate outfit from Oldham in the summer of 2014, but his playing time has been significantly limited by his injury troubles in recent times.
Will Korey Smith be able to regain his Bristol City starting spot when he returns?
Smith has become something of a forgotten man at Ashton Gate given the full extent of his injury troubles, but there can be no doubt that his eventual return will give the Robins a huge boost this term.
Lee Johnson has seen his midfield options limited so far this season with Adam Nagy having missed a couple of months with injury, but the fact of the matter is that he does have a strong midfield at his disposal when they are all at full fitness,
It is important that Smith is not rushed back into first-team action, as this could have played a role in his recurring injury problem previously, but this latest development is definitely a major step forward in his recovery process.
