Bristol City put five past Huddersfield Town at Ashton Gate to climb up into fifth place in the Championship.

Niclas Eliasson, who Lee Johnson has struggled to find a regular place for in the starting XI this season, proved the key man and produced a dazzling display for the hosts.

Huddersfield were forced into a change after just six minutes after Frazier Campbell picked up an injury–Adam Diakhaby his replacement.

Johnson had switched to a 4-3-3 for the visit of the Terriers and it proved a masterstroke as City were in the ascendancy from the off.

In the 10th minute, they got their reward. On his 150th appearance for the club, captain Josh Brownhill opened the scoring for the Robins, as Andreas Weimann’s strike deflected off him and into the back of the net.

The hosts thought they had a second moments later as Kamil Grabara fumbled Weimann’s shot into the path of Famara Diedhiou, who stabbed the ball in but the assistant referee's flag was up.

Huddersfield began to grow into the game with multiple chances through Karlan Grant, however, City doubled their lead on the half-hour mark. Brownhill zipped the ball to Eliasson from a corner and the Swede danced past his man before whipping a ball in that was bundled in by Terriers defender Terence Kongolo.

The visitors pulled one back five minutes later with Karlan Grant adding his 11th Championship goal of the season. The 22-year-old spun Nathan Baker in the box and fired his shot past a helpless Dan Bentley.

Not to be discouraged, Johnson’s men went right back up the pitch and restored their lead. Eliasson turned from creator to goalscorer, rising to meet Brownhill’s cross at the back post and add his first goal of the season after the Robins captain had skipped past a few defenders on the right.

They grabbed a fourth with five minutes to go in the half, with Eliasson playing a key role once again. The winger gathered a rebound from his own corner, skipped past a defender and floated a ball into the box for Ashley Williams to head home.

It could’ve been more for the hosts as twice they had penalty shouts waved away late in the first half–the right decision both times.

Cowley threw on summer signing Josh Koroma at half time, with Diakhaby, who had been brought on to replace Campbell early on, making way.

Weimann had Ashton Gate bouncing once again in the 49th minute. Some fantastic link-up play from Brownhill and Diedhiou allowed the Austrian to burst through, round the keeper and fire into the top corner from a tight angle.

The Robins started to get a bit too comfortable and let the visitors back into the game in the 59th minute. Juninho Bacuna had far too much time on the edge of the box and fired a low shot into the bottom corner.

With control slipping away Johnson looked to sure things up via the bench, throwing on fresh legs in Taylor Moore and Pedro Pereira, who replaced Nathan Baker and Jack Hunt.

The loudest cheer of the evening, though, was saved for City favourite Korey Smith, who received a spine-tingling reception when he replaced Adam Nagy late on.

The Terriers continued to press and had chances through Bacuna and Josh Koroma but were unable to make a breakthrough.

A worrying game for Huddersfield, who had their chances but looked wide open at the back and were never truly in the game. Joy though for City, who move to fifth in the Championship ahead of Preston North End's game on Monday.
