Middlesbrough’s pursuit of Nottingham Forest striker may have come to an end after the Teessiders agreed a deal with French side Toulouse for Danish international striker Martin Braithwaite.

The 26-year-old had been with the Ligue 1 club since 2013, and scored 35 goals in 136 league outings for the club, helping them to a comfortable mid table finish last season.

Now the international forward has swapped the south of France for the north of England, and will lead the line at the Riverside next season as Middlesbrough prepare for yet another year of Championship football following a single season return to the Premier League.

Braithwaite joins Boro having been held in high regard in the French league, and will hope a move to England will help him build upon the 16 caps he has already earned for his country.

The forward will surely have spoken to fellow Dane Lasse Vibe about life in the Championship having appeared in Danish squads alongside the Brentford striker, and will only have heard great things from the man who scored 15 league goals last semester.

Braithwaite is a different option to Assombalonga, but the striker has the potential to bring goals to manager Garry Monk’s team, despite averaging a goal every four games in France.

Braithwaite got 11 in the league to lead Toulouse’s goalscoring charts, and will hope that he can transfer and improve upon this form in the English second tier.

Bringing the Dane to the Championship is a real testament to the strength of the division, with top players willing to sacrifice playing in a top 5 European league to ply their trade in England.

Some may argue that the top half of the Championship are better than the bottom half of Ligue 1, and Braithwaite will feel that he can achieve his dream of Premier League football with Middlesbrough.

If Monk gets Braithwaite firing, then the striker could easily surpass 15 league goals, which should be enough to help fire Boro into the top six.
