New Sunderland boss Chris Coleman tasted defeat in his first game as Black Cats boss, as the Wearsiders returned from Aston Villa with a disappointing 2-1 defeat.
The beleaguered club look much-improved from performances in recent weeks, and a solid showing against a strong Villa side will certainly be looked upon positively by Sunderland fans.
2-0 down, Sunderland pulled one back to set up a nervy finish for the hosts, with Villa holding on to secure maximum points.
Appointed on Monday, Coleman himself expressed disappointment at the defeat, but will be quietly content with the performance of his side.
“There is nothing wrong with failing if you show yourself and step forward,” Coleman revealed in an interview with the club’s official site.
“If you do that more often than not, things turn for you.
“We’ve got an absolute mountain to climb, but let’s get on with it.”
Fans took to Twitter to share their view on the defeat, with Sunderland fans appearing much more confident than they have in recent weeks…

Positive signs are there. Clearly trying to play a passing game. O’Shea and Gibson need to get out of our club ASAP!

At last a manager who is realistic, reflective, cautiously optimistic and a decent speaker. Fully support this man.
