Charlton Athletic are reportedly set to sign free agent defender Adam Matthews until the end of the season, which has drawn an excited response from fans of the south London club.

The Addicks have been very busy adding quality to Lee Bowyer's squad after the club's transfer embargo was lifted following Thomas Sandgaard's successful takeover earlier in the summer.

Matthews' Charlton contract expired in the summer and due to the embargo they were unable to re-sign the defender but it seems a new deal is now close.

According to Richard Cawley from South London Press, the League One club are now set to sign the 28-year-old.

It is understood he will join the Addicks on a deal that will last until next summer.

Matthews has thrived at League One level previously, adding one goal and seven assists from right-back as he helped Sunderland reach the play-off final two years ago.

The defender looks set to be Charlton's 13th signing since their transfer embargo was lifted and will offer competition to the likes of Chris Gunter, Charlie Barker, and Adedeji Oshilaja at right-back.

Are these 12 facts about the Addicks’ history genuine or not?

Even after a busy summer, it seems Matthews' impending arrival has proved popular among the Valley faithful, with many fans taking to Twitter to voice their thoughts.
