The likes of Bartosz Bialkowski, Jed Wallace and Matt Smith have been grabbing the headlines for Millwall this season, but it’s fair to say that right-back Mahlon Romeo has turned out to be somewhat of an unsung hero at The Den.
Romeo might have only contributed to just one league goal this term, but his overall game has improved dramatically – especially since Gary Rowett walked through the door – and the former Gillingham defender is quickly becoming one of the best full-backs in the second-tier.
In previous seasons, the defensive side of Romeo’s game had came under scrutiny, whilst his concentration levels were questioned – with the 24-year-old making a number of errors that led to goals by being caught in possession.
However, 2019-2020 has proved to be a turning point in Romeo’s Lions career and his performances certainly haven’t gone unnoticed amongst Millwall fans this term.
In total, the defender has started 36 of the 37 Championship matches – including the previous 29 in succession – and has been so reliable that manager Gary Rowett was content with letting back-up right-back Jason McCarthy return to Wycombe Wanderers on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
Romeo was rewarded for his recent form with a new long-term contract, whilst Rowett also admitted that the Antigua and Barbuda defender has all the attributes to become a future Premier League player.
We have gathered together some of the best tweets about Romeo from the entire season – including some from supporters of other clubs….
Any other answer than Mahlon Romeo is wrong. Far and away the best RB in the league. Brilliant going forward and really improved defensively. You won’t find a more solid, hard working right hand sided RB/RW combo than Romeo and @jedwallace12 They compliment each other brilliantly

If/when we sell Aarons in the summer, Mahlon Romeo would be a really good option to compete with Byram at RB. #NCFC

Just look at Mahlon Romeo. Should never have been released and has excelled in the Championship. Good luck

Mahlon Romeo has been excellent tonight for Millwall, so much energy and he's carrying the ball so well going forward allowing the Millwall midfield to create space and move into dangerous areas.

He has his armchair critics like a lot of players, but Mahlon Romeo was excellent tonight. His importance to the #Millwall side is underrated.

If you get the chance to, look out for Mahlon Romeo’s tackle to deny what would have a been a certain goal in the first half, outstanding bit of defending. He’s had come on since joining but the further development under GR has been incredible #Millwall
