Bristol City defender Adam Webster is 'likely' to join Premier League Brighton during the current transfer window, the Daily Mirror have reported.

Webster has been the subject of plenty of speculation throughout the course of the summer, with several Premier League clubs including Everton, Newcastle and newly-promoted Aston Villa among those to have been linked with a move for the centre back.

According to the latest reports, however, it is Brighton who look closest to completing a move for Webster, with the Seagulls said to be set to pay £25million for the 24-year-old's services.

If confirmed, that would be both a record transfer fee paid by Brighton, and a record transfer fee received by Bristol City.

The centre back only moved to Ashton Gate from Ipswich Town last summer, and has gone onto make 47 appearances and score three goals in all competitions during his debut campaign with the Robins.

If confirmed, Webster will be the second centre back signed from the Football League by Brighton this summer, with Matt Clarke having already joined from Portsmouth earlier in the window.

The Verdict

This will be a blow for Bristol City.

Webster had a really impressive first season at Ashton Gate during the last campaign, and you feel he would have had a big role to play for the Robins in the coming campaign, following the permanent return of last year's defensive partner Tomas Kalas.

Even so, with a reported fee of £25million, this would be hard for Bristol City to turn down, and the potential business they could do with that sort of money could see them build a squad even more capable of challenging for promotion to the Premier League than before.

There is not long left in the transfer window however, so you feel time is of the essence to get everything done as quickly as possible as far as everyone is concerned, particularly with the new Championship season less than a week away.
