Brighton nearing ever near to completing deal for Portsmouth star

Premier League strugglers Brighton and Hove Albion are heading closer to sealing an agreement to sign Portsmouth defender Matthew Clarke.

According to respected journalist Alan Nixon, the 22-year-old is wanted by the Seagulls, and it is a deal which reportedly has plenty of legs in it according to Nixon.

Clarke has been in outstanding form for Pompey this season just gone and has seen his stock rise as one of the most outstanding talents outside of the top two leagues in English football.

He is expected to attract a plethora of interest over the summer, but it looks like Brighton have moved first to try and seal the signing of the centre-half, who will have been disappointed to see his team miss out on promotion to the Championship following their loss to Sunderland in the play-off semi-final.

Clarke has made quite the name for himself since moving to Fratton Park from Ipswich Town back in 2016, going on to make in excess of 100 appearanced for Pompey in what has proved a hugely successful time for the defender and the club.

However, Premier League interest might well be enough to tempt Clarke away from the League One outfit, with the 22-year-old no doubt keen to test himself at the top level.

The Verdict

It’s no surprise to see Clarke attracting interest from other clubs, especially teams like Brighton who are keen to add players who are young and not too expensive.

Clarke has been brilliant and he will be a massive loss to Pompey it has to be said, but they won’t want to begrudge him the chance of making a move into the top flight.
