Huddersfield Town manager Danny Cowley has revealed that the club are in communication with Brighton and Hove Albion over the future of midfielder Aaron Mooy.

Cowley is yet to coach Mooy at Town, with the 29-year-old currently on loan at the Sussex club and has made 11 Premier League appearances for them so far this term.

Mooy joined Town in the summer of 2016, initially on loan from Manchester City and played a pivotal role in the Terriers promotion to the Premier League after defeating Reading in the 2016/17 Championship play-off final.

Following Town's relegation from the top flight last term, the Australian penned a new three-year deal with the Terriers but instantly joined the Seagulls on a season-long loan, citing he was adamant he could 'test himself' once more in the top flight.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds on Thursday, boss Danny Cowley revealed that two clubs had been in communication and they will be in discussions in the coming weeks in regards to the midfielder's future.

Cowley told BBC Radio Leeds that: "Aaron Mooy is a top player and he is doing very well in a Brighton team that are moving up the league, and there will be negotiations and conversations between the clubs in regards to what happens next."

"We all know Aaron Mooy will make this football team and club significantly better with his presence but the player would have to do that," Cowley added, "He has improved with this club and this season he can play in the Premier League but the good thing is he is a Huddersfield Town player and his contract is long enough that we will be protected financially.

Cowley also revealed that there are open lines of communication between the Terriers and Brighton and Hove Albion's technical director Dan Ashworth but going forward the negotiations are in the hands of the 'business people' at the clubs.

The Verdict

Like what Cowley said, Aaron Mooy has certainly proved that he has the capabilities of playing in the Premier League and has turned in some good performances for Brighton so far this term.

Town have indeed protected their interests by ensuring Mooy has tied to a contract with the club and should be able to command a respectable fee for the Australian, should Brighton look to make his move permanent in January.

Approaching 30, no one can really blame Mooy for wanting to get as much Premier League football under his belt but a permanent departure from the Terriers will no doubt be disappointing for some.

The one positive should Mooy join Brighton on a permanent basis is that Huddersfield would have funds to reinvest back into the playing staff.
