Brighton & Hove Albion are the latest team to show an interest in Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge, Alan Nixon has reported on Patreon.

The battle for the Norway international is heating up with two days to go until the January transfer window closes, with the Blades now expected to cash in on the 24-year-old due to the fact they are currently under an EFL embargo due to unpaid transfer instalments.

Berge has attracted interest from both Liverpool and Chelsea recently, but it emerged on Sunday afternoon prior to United's FA Cup clash with non-league Wrexham that Fulham were in talks to try and take the central midfielder to West London, with a fee of £20 million plus add-ons offered by the Cottagers according to Sky Sports.

Newcastle United are also exploring a move for Berge as well late in the window, albeit reportedly only a potential loan arrangement, but Brighton will now be added to the mix.

The Seagulls could be in the market for reinforcements late in the day with the future of Chelsea and Arsenal-linked Moises Caicedo still up in the air with Tuesday's deadline approaching.

Following United's 3-3 draw with Wrexham, head coach Paul Heckingbottom confirmed that the club were in negotiations with other teams regarding the future of Berge, who he claimed does not want to depart Bramall Lane.

The Verdict

The race for Berge could be the mostly hotly-contested one of the final two days of the transfer window.

There is considerable interest in his signature and because of Sheffield United's financial issues, which must be worse than first reported or feared, they will no doubt look to get a deal sorted as soon as possible.

Berge showed flashes of his brilliant in the top flight when he was fit and available, but in the Championship he's not always been the dominant midfielder that you'd expect he would be.

It's unlikely that Berge would be any kind of Caicedo replacement at the Amex Stadium though - they are two completely different types of players and it's more-than likely that Roberto De Zerbi and co want to bolster their engine room regardless.

We will soon see who wins the race for Berge's services, but don't discount anyone who is interested right now as United shop around for the best deal.
