There was rampant speculation over the course of the summer regarding the future of the 26-year old central midfielder, with Derby County reported to have been weighing up an offer in order to secure his services.

Despite playing a huge role in the Seagulls’ side that is pushing for promotion to the Premier League, notching six goals and recording a further four assists, the former Charlton man is believed to have rejected any offer of a new contract at the Amex Stadium.

Said to be unhappy with the terms given to him, there were reports from TalkSPORT last year that he could be angling for a move back to the north of England.

Bolton born, the former Bury and Oldham Athletic youngster has been plying his trade toward the southern regions of the country since joining Southampton on loan back in 2011.

Brighton are currently five points off top spot with six remaining, though are all but certain to land a place in the playoffs. Looking to close the gap on second placed Middlesbrough, they face a tricky trip to Nottingham Forest this evening.

Would you Brighton fans be disappointed with losing Stephens? Or could potentially cope in the Premier League without him?
