High-flying Brighton and Hove Albion are eyeing a potential move for Welsh international David Cotterill, according to the Daily Mail.

Sky Bet Championship side Birmingham City could be on track to lose another wide-man in this transfer window, following the completed deal which saw 19-year-old Demarai Gray leave for Premier League side Leicester City.

The 28-year-old has established himself as a set piece specialist has been an integral part of manager Gary Rowett’s plans this season, and losing another winger would be a huge blow to the play-off push the club are currently looking to build in the second half of the Championship season.

It is now believed that former Blues boss Chris Hughton is looking to trigger Cotterill’s £1m buy-out clause in his contract, which could see the former Swansea City winger join up with Brighton in the few weeks.

If a deal can be completed, Brighton will underline their Premier League ambitions by giving manager Chris Hughton the money to spend on strengthening their squad in the January transfer window.

Albion, who currently sit fourth in the Sky Bet Championship table will be looking to secure promotion to the Premier League following an unexpected first half of the campaign, which has seen them reach a record breaking 21 league games without defeat.

The Welsh international is returning from a knee injury which he picked up in November and the 28-year-old has started 11 games for Blues this season, with two goals and three assists.

Rowett would surely be disappointed to lose any more of the club’s attacking force which may damage their hopes of securing promotion to the Premier League.
