Brentford are on the cusp of making history.

Thomas Frank's side are potentially 90 minutes away from securing promotion to the Premier League if they can just oust Swansea City in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium.

The Bees have built a really strong side which is based on finding under-valued, high-potential players who are ready to take the club to the next level.

Brentford are one of the youngest teams in the Championship, but that hasn't always been the case with the club historically naming a number of experienced faces in their side.

Some of these golden oldies have even found the back of the net for the club, so with that in mind here are Brentford's top 10 oldest ever goalscorers.

Anthoyn Rougier only spent one season with Brentford in 2003-2004.

The Bees were competing in the Second Division during that campaign and the Trinidad and Tobago international certainly established himself as a big player for Wally Downes' side.

Rougier scored four goals for the club in that season, with his last one coming on January 31st 2004 in a 3-2 victory over Port Vale.

The midfielder was aged 32 years 6 months and 14 days when he found the back of the net, making him Brentford's 10th oldest ever goalscorer.

He then moved on to join Bristol City in March 2004.

Coming in at number nine on our list we have Sam Saunders.

The midfielder is a real favourite at Brentford after spending seven and a half years with the club between 2009 and 2017 before going on to join Wycombe Wanderers.

Saunders made 206 appearances for the club and scored 30 goals in total, with the last one putting him firmly in our list of oldest goalscorers.

He was 32 years 8 months and 1 day old when he found the net in a 3-0 victory over Fulham on April 30th 2016.

No wonder the club wanted to bring him back as a coach for their B team.

Jonathan Douglas comes in at number eight in our list of Brentford's oldest goalscorers.

After lengthy spells with Blackburn Rovers, Leeds United and Swindon Town the midfielder made a move to Griffin Park in 2011 where he spent the next four years of his career.

During that time he helped the club to secure promotion to the Championship and very nearly saw them to promotion after helping them to the play-offs in 2015.

His last goal for the club came on April 18th 2015 in a 2-2 draw with Bolton Wanderers - a game that he played at the age of 33 years, 4 months and 27 days.

It's a central defender who makes it at number seven.

Martin Taylor spend much of his career with Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City and Watford but found time for a brief stay at Brentford towards the end his playing days.

He only spent two months on loan at Griffin Park but made an impression after scoring twice in just six games for the club.

His last effort came on September 29th 2013 in a 2-0 away win over Coventry City in League One.

On that day Taylor was 33 years, 10 months and 20 days old and ended up retiring from the game at the end of that season after returning to parent club Sheffield Wednesday.

Another player who came to Brentford in the autumn of his career.

Tommy Smith made his name as a Watford legend and also went on to play for Sunderland, Derby County, Queens Park Rangers and many others.

In 2014 he moved to Griffin Park on a one-year deal, and made a great start to life with the club after scoring on his debut.

That strike came in a 1-1 home draw with Charlton Athletic on August 9th 2014, a goal which came at the age of 34 years, two months and 18 days.

It would prove to be his only strike for Brentford, but was certainly a memorable one.

A player who is certainly regarded as a Brentford favourite.

Marcus Gayle started his career with the Bees before moving on to play for the likes of Wimbledon, Rangers and Watford before returning to Griffin Park in 2005.

In one season back at the club, Gayle made 37 appearances for the club and scored two goals in that time.

His last effort for the club came on April 22 2006 in a 3-1 away victory over Swindon Town in League One.

Gayle was 35 years 6 months and 26 days old when he scored that effort.

The midfielder made his name in the game for his versatility that he showed during his career, but he certainly knew where the back of the net was when it mattered.

Ricky Newman came through the youth ranks with Crystal Palace where he made his first team breakthrough before going on to join Millwall and Reading.

In 2005 he moved to Brentford in League One where spent just one year at Griffin Park.

In that time he made 39 appearances for the club and scored three goals for the Bees, the last of which came in a 3-1 home victory over Barnsley at the age of 35 years 7 months and 6 days.

Another player who finished his successful career with Brentford.

John Salako started his career with Crystal Palace and made over 200 appearances for the club before moving on to Coventry City, Fulham, Charlton Athletic and Reading.

He moved to the Bees in 2004 and scored his last goal for the club in a 1-0 win over Colchester United in League  One on December 18th 2004.

At the time of the strike Salako was 35 years, 10 months and 7 days old, making him Brentford's third oldest goalscorer.

At number two we have a striker with an eye for goal.

Nicky Forster scored plenty of goals for the likes of Gillingham, Brentford, Reading, Hull City and Brighton before moving back to Griffin Park later in his career.

That move came in 2010 when he made 17 appearances before making the move into management.

His final goal came on January 14th 2011 against Exeter City - a goal which he scored at the age of 37 years, 4 months and 6 days.

It may have been his only goal of his second spell with Brentford but there's no doubt that the player will be fondly remembered by Brentford fans for the role that he played over his time at the club.

Brentford's oldest ever goalscorer was none other than Spanish full-back Javi Venta.

After a successful career in Spain with the likes of Vilarreal and Levante, the experienced wing-back made the move to the Bees in 2013 for what would be a short-lived spell at Griffin Park.

Venta made just five appearances for the club but did find the back of the net in a 5-3 EFL Trophy victory over AFC Wimbledon on September 3rd 2013.

The Spaniard was 37 years, 8 months and 21 days when he struck that effort, before having his contract at the club terminated later that month.
