Brentford's summer signing Niko Karelis notched a potentially crucial goal for the Bees in a behind closed doors friendly on Thursday afternoon.

The Greek marksman played the full 90 minutes against an unnamed side and scored the club's second as they drew 2-2, with Josh Clarke scoring the second for the West Londoners.

Clarke opened the scoring, firing in off the far post after some excellent build-up play from another summer signing, Mathias Jensen.

Karelis converted Joel Valencia's excellent cross in the second-half to make the scores 2-1 before they were eventually pegged back again.

Dominic Thompson, Dru Yearwood and Josh Dasilva also played 70 minutes of the contest as Thomas Frank looked to keep his first-team stars sharp over the international break.

The Bees head into the second break of the season sat in 17th place, with just nine goals to their name from the first 11 matches, and will be keen to bounce back from a Nottingham Forest defeat against Millwall.

Karelis made the move to Frank's set-up on a free transfer during the summer window but is yet to break his duck for the first-team, although he has played just under 30 minutes of football so far.

The verdict

This could prove to be a huge boost to Karelis and Brentford as a whole.

At the moment, all of the pressure is very much on Ollie Watkins to continue his fine goalscoring form but if Karelis can emerge as another outlet, it could prove crucial.

With Sergi Canos set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines there is a place available in attack, and this will have done no harm to his chances at all.
