Brentford blew hot and cold last year and they were probably the most unpredictable team in the Championship.
On their day, Brentford were brushing teams aside and winning games with ease; Lasse Vibe was scoring goals, John Egan and Harlee Dean were inspirational at the back and Sergi Canos and Jota were devastating in the attacking midfield regions.
However, on other days, they would simply fold and look terrible.
If Dean Smith can iron out the inconsistency and get Brentford performing to a high standard every week, then there is a genuine chance of promotion to the Premier League.
In order to do so, though, Brentford probably need two or three top quality additions to add to their ranks.
The Bees should be looking at former star Harry Forrester, who might be made available this summer.
Pedro Caixinha is in the middle of a major squad revamp at Rangers and a number of players are being shown the door, including Joe Garner, who moved to Ipswich.
Forrester has previously had a bust-up with Caixinha so he might be joining the mass exodus leaving Rangers this summer.
If he is made available, Brentford need to swoop in quickly to re-sign him.
The former Aston Villa academy product was inspirational for Brentford in League One after joining on a free transfer but he then moved to Doncaster.
The 26-year-old is mainly used as a substitute by Rangers and he only started seven games in the Scottish Premiership last season.
With three goals to his name last year, Forrester could be tempted by a move back to England.
